LORNE SCULPTURE BIENNALÉ

12 MAR — 3 APR 2022

THE CURATORIAL THEME FOR THE EVENT ‘SPIRIT OF PLACE’ SPEAKS SPECIFICALLY TO LORNE; ITS HISTORIES, THE OCEAN, THE ENVIRONMENT, ITS PEOPLE.

This year I am one of sixteen artists invited to provide a sculptural response to one of sixteen locations along Lorne’s foreshore. Each site holds in its history multiple stories all waiting to be told.

The site I am working with is The Estuary, a traditional place where the Hooded Plovers lay their eggs - just above the high tide mark or the intertidal zone. I've been working to understand the importance of intertidal zones in Arnhem Land for the last 25 years with Traditional Owners.

Focussing on the plight of the Hooded Plover, the large-scale installation for LSB2022 is an embodiment of extinction-in-process of this tiny, yet significant bird indigenous to Lorne and southern Australia.

THE LAST HOODED PLOVER

The Hooded Plover has become a local story of environmental destruction and the fight against extinction. My work for this exhibition pays homage to this survivor.
